Uco Valley: with higher-quality red wines than last years

Colored wines from Uco Valley improved their quality regarding those of the past few years, according to the annual Ucovin tasting held the last weekend. Whites were less expressive.

Uco Valley’s reds dazzled in the last edition of the annual tasting conducted in the high-altitude and prestigious productive oasis located in Mendoza. The most notable absentees were Tempranillo and Semillón. The varietals that stood out were Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. 900 samples participated in the 17th edition of this tasting.

According to Horacio Peinado, from the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) of San Carlos, Mendoza, “we were surprised at seeing the excellent scores they reached. Their scores in terms of quality exceeded the ones of last years, “he said referring to the red exponents assessed in the 17th edition of the sensory activity, which was attended by 900 people involved in the Argentine viticulture.

“15 samples were assessed, which showed us the characteristics of 2011 wines from Uco Valley. They were selected among 60 wines sent by the wineries of the region. The sensory assessment was in charge of a panel of experts who highlighted the expression achieved by a Merlot, a varietal with low demand, and an aged Malbec with oak features. The Malbec, although its winemaking process lasted just a few months, it will be aged during 12 or 18 months, “commented Peinado.
