There is no sign that Malbec has flooded the American Market

According to Ed Lehrman, the Argentina signature varietal is in the very early days of development in the United States. He also maintains that Argentine wines continue their positioning within the USD10-15 price range.

Ed Lehrman, co-founder of “Vine Connections”, company dedicated to market imported and national wines, specialized in Argentine wine and Japanese sake, spoke at the last ‘International Wine Forum’ about the future of Argentina’s wines in the United States.

According to him, Argentina is still at the first stages. “In fact, Argentine wine sales are so small, relatively speaking, that Argentina doesn’t even show up as a category in many reports of total market statistics. That should change soon, but you should be aware that Argentina is still not on the top of everyone’s mind in the United States, even those in the wine business.”

Then, in response to the question:  Is American market showing any signs that Malbec has reached a saturation point? Lehrman answered that, as a varietal or type of wine it is still very new. “Today, Malbec is known among the regular wine drinking public and heavy wine drinkers, though even among that group, it is very new and not well tried or understood.”
