E-commerce is making a big impact on the whole world. Buying a product directly from the comfort of home or office is one of the main advantages. As regards wines in the United States, there are several online companies selling only wines and their success is very surprising. One of the examples is Wine.com or Snooth.com, among the most famous. In Argentina, not only wineries seem reluctant to sell wines via this channel, but also no wine sales company is found yet.
In an interview with WineSur, Nicolás Casco, CEO at D´arriens, an on-line Marketing company, who worked previously as sales director at “Mercado Libre Latinoamérica”, stated that besides wine, no product should remain outside this trend. “In 2001, there were 3.7 million of Internet users in Argentina, of which only 10% dared to shop using electronic commerce. In 2010, the number of users amounted to 25 million and the buying decision reached 25%. On a global scale, this percentage is obviously higher.
According to a research conducted by VinQuest, in the United States, in 2010, online sales increased by 12% reaching a record of USD 3.4 million.
In relation with consumers, he highlighted: “today, 50% of online consumers are women and the other 50% are men. The age range is wide going from 25 to 55 years approximately. However, in 5 years, those who do not sell by means of Internet will be outside the system and the whole world will use Internet to shop. It should be borne in mind that younger generations grew up in front of a computer; so they study, read, play and communicate through the web. All their activities are performed through mobile devices.”
