Project: Wine wastes for the pharmaceutical industry

Wine wastes left from the winemaking process, far from being thrown away, are generally reused in different kinds of activities, such as cosmetology and pharmaceutical industry. The “Universidad Nacional de Cuyo”, Mendoza, Argentina, is conducting several projects in order to reuse these wastes.

The “Universidad Nacional de Cuyo”, in Mendoza, has been carrying out different studies. One of the last ones stood out for researching the use of waste in the pharmaceutical industry.

Andrea Antoniolli, a researcher at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, explained that in wineries, after the winemaking process there are different wastes left: liquids (effluent), organic solids (pomace, lees, stems), and other solids (derived from packaging, and others).
