The National Institute of Viticulture published the report about the development of the Argentinian areas under vineyard cultivation in 2009 (which was performed at the end of the 2010 harvest). Argentina amounted to 228,575 hectares divided in 26,175 vineyards. Considering these figures, hectares increased by 0.94% and 0.33% in the amount of vineyards, compared with the data of 2008.

According to the data provided by the INV, during 2009 there was a predominance of winemaking grape varieties standing for 93% of the total cultivated area, which increased 13% compared with 2000. The table grape varieties amounted to 5% of the area under cultivation and increased by 31%. In the case of raisins, they stood for 2% of the cultivated vineyards and increased by 10.54%, compared with the year 2000.

The report shows that fresh grapes experienced the greatest growth (22.36%). Besides, winemaking grapes increased 12.12% and raisins 5.76%, compared with 2000.

Among the winemaking varieties, which amount to 213,034 hectares, the report corroborates a noticeable preference for red grapes, which stand for 48% of the cultivated area and increased 47%, compared with 2000. Some of the favorite red varieties are Malbec, Bonarda, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, among others.

In the case of rose grapes, which amount to 29% of the vineyards, some cultivated varieties are Cereza, Criolla Grande and Moscatel Rosada. As regards white grapes, which amount to 23%, some well known varieties are Pedro Giménez, Torrontés Riojano, Chardonnay and Moscatel de Alejandría. Both white and rose grapes decreased in the total cultivated area: 2.7% and 10.6% respectively.
