zonda-mendoza-03Tupungato was the area with the greatest damage. Throughout the greater Mendoza area there were several fires, dislodged roofs, and fallen trees.

Strong “Vientos Zondas” (warm winds that sometimes come out of the Andes, ranging in strength) started yesterday early afternoon and continued throughout the evening tapering off during the night. At one point temperatures on the plains at the base of the Andes surged to 29 Celsius (84 F), a common phenomenon during a “Zonda”

Civil Defense responded to 75 incidents of fires, dislodged rooftops, fallen cables, and fallen trees. There were no injuries reported. Several education institutions had to cancel classes last evening.  The tunnel to Chile remained closed to traffic, at the border.

The areas most affected are in the northern part of the province, greater Mendoza, and Tupungato.  In Mendoza city a house burned completely down.

According to the National Meteorological Service, isolated showers are expected for Thursday.
