Cristina Kirchner has been resoundingly re-elected as president of Argentina with the biggest share of the vote since General Juan Domingo Peron was elected for the third time in 1973.
Strong economic growth and a change in her image following the death of her husband Nestor Kirchner a year ago helped Mrs Kirchner to win almost 54 per cent of the vote compared to 17 per cent for her closer challenger.
The result capped a remarkable comeback for the president, whose approval ratings were below 30 per cent less than two years ago.
She had been widely expected to stand aside to allow Mr Kirchner, who served as president from 2003 to 2007, to run again this year before his death from a heart attack in October 2010.
“He’s here more than ever,” Mrs Kirchner, 58, said of her late husband, who was credited with lifting the country out of its financial meltdown of 2001, during a victory speech in Buenos Aires.
“This man who transformed Argentina led us all and gave everything he had and more ... Without him, without his valour and courage, it would have been impossible to get to this point.”
