23 percent hike in per-child payments

Argentina raised its welfare payments by 23 percent on Wednesday to keep up with inflation, a move that will cost $520 million more for a government already spending vast amounts to create jobs and raise salaries.

President Cristina Fernandez said the allowance paid to families who keep their children vaccinated and in school has had an impressive impact in Argentine society and must be maintained. Similar conditional cash transfer programs have brought millions out of poverty across Latin America.
