Kirchner died early Wednesday of heart failure at age 60, at a hospital in his hometown El Calafate in Santa Cruz province, some 1,700 miles southwest of Buenos Aires. His wife, current President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, was at his side.

Kirchner had already had heart surgery twice this year and had suffered an obstructed carotid artery.
