In the spirit of Argentina’s 200th Birthday on May 25th, local online media “MDZ Online” encouraged their readers to find and send in images of the province from back in the old days.
Once such reader, José Paris, a mendocino who has lived in New York for over 40 years, tapped into his hobby collection of antique images from Mendoza, and sent in a dozen photos from the years 1907 to 1908.
Another reader, Eduardo Rufino, who manages a blog called mendozantigua.blogspot.com which is dedicated to recuperating antique images from Mendoza, sent in an image of the ”Ruins of San Francisco” and the old city of Mendoza.
Many other images were submitted by mendocinos Jorge Chaine, Nélida Rosas, Pedro D. Escalante, Marcela Gutiérrez, Carlos Segura, Mercedes del Pilar, Isabel Demare, Graciela Moretti, and Coco Yáñez.
Mendoza’s image history in that time period was primarily captured by the cameras of three important photographers: Adolfo Alexander, Christiano Junior y Juan Pi. The images of Alexander, the only ones which show the city before the earthquake of 1861, have presumably been lost.
