Tango and wine: The ultimate Argentinean combination

Both of them probably rank high on most tourists’ agendas when they come here, but unbeknown to many on arrival, the experience is pretty polarised: Tango is all about Buenos Aires, and wine is all about Mendoza.

The streets of Buenos Aires aren’t flooded with tanguistas strutting their stuff in every corner, despite overzealous guidebook comments saying just that (I mean, honestly – could you imagine a city where people dance all day, every day on the street? It’s called Disneyland, and it doesn’t feel all that authentic).

But there is an authenticity to tango culture in Buenos Aires, and you will see pockets of the sexy dance in almost every corner. Whether it be big, expensive tango shows in theatre bars in the microcentro to outdoor tango performances in the colourful but shamelesslytouristy La Boca district, orgrandiose and formal milongas in old dance halls in the upmarket neighbourhoods to underground electro-tango nights in the edgier, cooler barrios – you can certainly find a tango for all tastes. But as far as it goes for wine… unless you make your way to exclusive (and usually exclusively overpriced) wine bars, your ‘vino’ experience will probably be down to pot luck on the wine menu at restaurants.
