Caminata-1Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk, the world’s largest social photography event, will arrive in Mendoza for the first time on July 24, 2010. Photography enthusiasts – amateur to professional – are invited to register for a set walk through downtown Mendoza before heading to at Cervezas Antares pub on Aristides Villanueva for drinks and slideshows.

“The goal of the event is to bring both locals and visitors to explore and photograph the downtown area as a group,” said walk organizer Jeff Bartlett. “The fact that the event is free should really help draw a good crowd.”

While the event is indeed free, walkers must pre-register on the World Wide Photo Walk web site. It’s an easy but essential process that will help the event run smoothly.  As a bonus, registered photographers can submit their best image after the walk to be eligible to win prizes. Bartlett will award the best image shot during the Mendoza walk, while an overall grand prize and several “honorable mentions” will be awarded to the best images taken during the international event by organizer Scott Kelby and a panel of judges.

Although it’s the first time a walk has been scheduled for Mendoza, the worldwide event is two years old. Last year, 32 000 photographers participated in more than 900 walks around the world. Taking into account that the average photo walker takes 300 photos during the event, more than 10 million images were snapped during the same day last July and this year’s event is on pace to shatter those dramatic numbers. The success can be attributed to the simple fact that photographers love sharing their work.

“Photography is usually viewed as a solitary activity, but the truth of the matter is that people love to shoot together, compare notes and just have fun with photography,” said event organizer Scott Kelby. “The Worldwide Photo Walk is a social phenomenon. It’s the joy of shooting with friends, new and old that makes this event so special.”

Those interested in attending Mendoza’s inaugural photo walk can find more information online. Remember, space is limited to fifty participants, so make sure to register to insure your place.
