CFK announces creation of Tourism Ministry, cites statistics' growth

bah-25466_not_20100628_529561_pp-sPresident Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced the creation of the Argentine Tourism Ministry at Government House, saying that since 2003 "tourism statistics have been incredible and the amount of dollars that have entered" the country "doubled."

She added that the amount of tourists that came to Argentina has also doubled. "In 2003, we were 40 th in the ranking, with just 17 conferences held in this country. In 2008, we launched a marketing plan and held 115 events, moving within the ranks to number 22. In 2009, we held 145 events and climbed to spot 19" on an international level.

The ministry will be led by current Tourism Secretary Enrique Meyere, who will be sworn in as minister on Wednesday. In addition, Fernández de Kirchner defended the administration of Aerolíneas Argentinas and asked for "other ways of filing complaints" so as not to harm its services.
