articlenopicEx Argentine President and current UNASUR Secretary General Néstor Kirchner will meet with Chilean President Sebastián Piñera this week, along with political and parliamentary leaders from that country.

Kirchner will reiterate a message of support for the UNASUR South American Nations Union and will also look for parliamentary support for the regional bloc's treaty, which would embody its composition.

The Chilean Congress, just like that of Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay, have not yet formalized their support of the treaty and nine of the twelve member countries must sign on if the document is to be passed.

Afterwards, Kirchner will meet with ex presidents Ricardo Lagos and Michelle Bachelet and will also meet with pro-government leaders and politicians from the Partido de la Concertación as well.

During his last visit to Quito, Ecuador the Secretary General said that "in order for the UNASUR to grow, it is fundamental" for the relations between member countries to include "total respect." He added that "diversity could allow for the construction of a regional bloc" that will be good enough for our people.

The agreement for the creation of the UNASUR bloc was signed in Brasilia on May 12, 2008 and the member countries approved the designation of Néstor Kirchner as Secretary General of the body last May.
