Chile win Copa America tourist battle

Paraguay and Uruguay may be contesting the final but with their combined populations barely 10 million, organisers Argentina are thanking their lucky stars Chile at least got to the quarter-finals to boost tourism.

The Chileans, who make a surprise exit to Venezuela, spent most of their time at Mendoza and San Juan, relatively near the border, and with more than 30,000 fans backing them they constituted almost three quarters of Copa tourists in the area.

Tourist officials say Mendoza can point to around 190 million pesos (46 million dollars) in revenue in the three weeks the city hosted Copa action, well above expectations, as 65,000 people flocked to the northern city.
